Why Your Bed Base Matters as Much as Your Mattress

Why Your Bed Base Matters as Much as Your Mattress

Most people spend weeks researching the perfect mattress — firmness, materials, brand, price — and then place it on whatever bed base they already have, or the cheapest one they can find. It's one of the most common and costly mistakes in bedroom setup. Your bed base is not just a frame to hold your mattress off the floor. It directly affects how your mattress performs, how long it lasts, and how well you sleep.

How Your Bed Base Affects Your Mattress

Every mattress is engineered to perform on a specific type of base. Place a foam mattress on a solid platform with no ventilation and you trap heat and moisture underneath, accelerating the breakdown of the foam and creating the perfect environment for mould and dust mites. Place a pocket spring mattress on a base with slats too far apart and the springs sag between the gaps, creating uneven support and premature wear.

The right base does three things: it provides even, consistent support across the entire mattress surface; it allows adequate airflow underneath the mattress; and it absorbs some of the load so the mattress doesn't have to do all the work alone.

Slatted Bases — What to Look For

If you're using a slatted bed base, the slats should be no more than 7cm apart. Wider gaps allow the mattress to sag between slats, creating pressure points and uneven wear. The slats should also be flexible enough to absorb some movement — rigid, fixed slats transfer more impact back into the mattress.

Slat width matters too. Wider slats (7cm+) distribute weight more evenly than narrow ones. And the base frame itself should be solid — a centre support beam is essential for Queen and King sizes to prevent the middle of the base from flexing under load.

Platform Bases — Solid vs Slatted

Solid platform bases look sleek and feel firm, but they can be problematic for foam mattresses. Without airflow underneath, moisture from body heat and perspiration has nowhere to go. Over time this leads to foam degradation, odour, and hygiene issues. If you prefer a platform base, choose one with ventilation holes or a slatted top panel rather than a completely solid surface.

Gas Lift Bed Frames — The Smart Choice

A gas lift bed frame solves the storage problem that plagues most Melbourne bedrooms while providing a quality slatted base for your mattress. The hydraulic lift mechanism raises the entire mattress platform, revealing a large storage cavity underneath — ideal for spare linen, seasonal clothing, suitcases, and anything else that needs a home.

Our Haven Gas Lift Bed Frame and Cove Gas Lift Bed Frame both feature quality slatted bases designed to work with our mattress range. The slat spacing is optimised for both foam and spring mattresses, and the solid frame construction provides the even support that extends mattress life.

Matching Your Base to Your Mattress

Foam mattresses (like our Night Cloud and Quantum Foam Cloud) — need a slatted base with slats no more than 7cm apart and adequate airflow. Avoid completely solid platforms.

Pocket spring mattresses (like our Imperial Cloud, Opulence, and Axis) — perform best on a slatted base with flexible slats. The springs need consistent support across the full surface.

Firm mattresses (like our Terra Firm) — can work on a solid platform but benefit from a slatted base for airflow and longevity.

Don’t Void Your Warranty

Using an inappropriate base can void your mattress warranty. Most manufacturer warranties specify the type of base required — typically a slatted base with slats no more than 7cm apart, or a solid base with ventilation. Always check the warranty requirements before placing your mattress on an existing base.
